For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. – Matthew 5:45
Have
you ever heard the phrase, “You must be living right”? This often seems
to be spoken in reference to people who
have just had something good happen to them unexpectedly. Yet,
contrary to that line of reasoning, living right has nothing to do with
it. Today’s
focus verse lets us know that good and bad things happen to those
who live right as well as to those who do not. The Bible gives many
promises to those
who live as they should, but a trouble-free life is not one of them.
In fact, we are admonished, “For our light affliction, which is but for
a moment,
worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17). As Christians, we will have “afflictions,” but they
are allowed
for a divinely appointed purpose, and we do not have to face them
alone.
When we ask Jesus to
forgive our sins, He makes a real change in our lives. We no longer have
the heartache and trouble that accompany a life of sin. However,
problems still come, even to those who are living a pure life, holy
and above reproach. Cars still break down, our bodies still get sick;
many situations
arise that are out of our control. However, we now have someone we
can turn to—a Friend like no other. What a comfort!
Trials come into our lives
for many reasons. Sometimes they may be the result of decisions that we
could have made more wisely. Sometimes God is trying
to get our attention—maybe we have wandered away and He is trying to
draw us back to Himself. Sometimes God even allows trials to test our
faith
and make us stronger in Him. Whatever the purpose, if we keep our
hands firmly in His, we can be confident that He will take us through.
