“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel”—which, when translated, means, “God with us.” Matthew 1:23
We hear a lot of messages at Christmas time but this is what we keep coming back to:
In the depths of winter, in the darkness of night, a light comes to the world. Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
Emmanuel. God with us.
And not just with us, but uniquely present in the people and places that the world would oppress and cast aside. The one we call Messiah was born to an unwed Middle Eastern immigrant living under occupation.
At a time when the Roman emperor was called Son of God and savior of the world, the earliest Christians told a treasonous tale of the one they'd come to follow. That claim, that Jesus is Lord, is still as radical and relevant today as it was two thousand years ago.
After the wise men encountered the baby Jesus, they were so moved by what they experienced that they returned home by another way. That's been our experience with Christ and with Queer Theology and it's our hope for you, too.
God is here, with us, for us. For you.
A savior is born!
Merry Christmas!
