“Because of God’s tender mercy, the light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.” Luke 1:78-79

The most shocking fall I ever had was when I climbed to the second story of a building in complete darkness. I thought I knew how to find the light. But before I could reach it, I was tumbling down unseen stairs in utter dismay. I had turned the wrong way.

Luke tells us that Jesus came to bring light into our darkness. We normally sit in the shadow of death. In God’s tender mercy, He came to guide us in the way of peace.

What is the way of peace? The way of peace is remedial and relational. It is costly and free. It is distant and close. It is intercessional and intimate. The way of peace demonstrated a way of exit and entry for Jesus and for us.

The way of peace for Jesus was to leave His home to live with us as a helpless, powerless infant in a poor family on our planet. The shadow of death would be forever changed for us only through His costly, sacrificial death.

The chastisement, the wounds, the bruises, the punishment for our peace was on him. (Isaiah 53:5) At His expense, we may now freely come to God and daily have a clean and clear relationship with Him in His light.

Now you and I are no longer in the dark. Jesus saves us utterly. He lives purposefully interceding for us (Hebrews 7:25. Nothing can come between us. He is our peace, and our light in the darkness. If you seek Him, you won’t fall.

Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for showing me the path of peace. You are the path to life. Your word is my light so that I don’t stumble and fall into darkness. Amen.

Going Deeper — Take some time to be with Jesus today and feel His peace guiding you. “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts you double-minded” (James 4:8).
