That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. – John 1:9
The
voices of my son and daughter counting interrupted the silence in the
backseat. “Eight, nine . . . ten . . . eleven,
twelve . . .” I was purposely driving the long way home from the
store, past the houses with the most Christmas lights. The usually dark,
quiet streets
were punctuated with colorful displays of lights, and my children
were counting how many decorated houses they saw. Strings of lights in
every hue
outlined the shapes of the nativity, a snowman, stars, and a
multitude of other holiday symbols that were on the houses and in the
yards. Through the
windows of many homes, we could see trees sparkling with lights and
ornaments.
Christmas lights entice us
to come and see, especially at this time of year, when the days are
shorter and darkness comes so soon. Whole streets are decorated,
and people by the carload flock to see the lights and listen to
Christmas music.
At Christmas time, we
remember that Jesus came to be the Light that shines in a world darkened
by sin. Isaiah prophesied about Jesus coming to earth: “The
people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that
dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light
shined” (Isaiah 9:2). If we will look to Jesus, He will light our way.
Sometimes, He shines out
as a beacon on life’s road, like the lighted houses that dot the streets
on our way home. Other times, He will be seen in a spectacular
way, similar to the neighborhoods where every house on the block is
lighted. Either way, He shines out for the one seeking Him.
Though we can understand
this analogy and the lights we see today are beautiful and bright, all
earthly lights—even the sun, the brightest light
seen from earth—pale in comparison to Jesus. He is the Light of
Heaven. “And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to
shine in
it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light
thereof” (Revelation 21:23).
Jesus truly is the Light of the world. At this Christmas time, may He be the Light of our lives.
