“And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening.” - Genesis 24:63a

Meditation prepares the way for God to do His work. In this age of technology — where the clanging of the constant opinions and thoughts of others clatter into our hearts and minds — it takes a full resolve and a disciplined intent to surround ourselves with pure quietness. When we do so, however, we are more able to ponder on God and what He has to tell us.

When Isaac was meditating in the field, he was preparing his heart and mind to receive what God had for him… a wife. “…And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming” (Genesis 24:63b). He was able to see God’s answer to his questions about finding a wife. She was on her way to him because Isaac’s father’s servant, who was in charge of finding her, had sought God’s direction as well.

Proverbs 4:20-22 says, “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh.” It’s vital for our growth, and in the healing of broken areas in our lives, to take time throughout the day to quiet ourselves. Then we can contemplate on God’s Word and ask Him to clean our hearts so we can hear Him clearly and know His will for our lives. Then we can be prepared for what He has for us.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your words, and that they bring life and healing. I ask that you search my heart and know me so I may love you and know you more. I desire for your Holy Spirit to speak to me and guide me in the ways you have for me. Amen.

Go Deeper — The field was one of the places where Isaac meditated. Whatever that place is for you, whether in your car, bedroom, or while you’re on a walk, take that time to set aside all distractions and spend time with God.
