For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7
As
I walked past a public bus one evening, an advertisement on its side
caught my attention. It read: “Danger is real,
fear is a choice.” Immediately I started pondering the statement. In
general, it is true that the world has become a dangerous place. There
are serious
threats of terrorism, identity theft, acts of violent crime, vehicle
accidents, natural disasters, and the list could go on and on.
Certainly, danger
is real.
But is fear a choice? As I
thought about that advertisement, today’s focus verse came to my mind.
Even though dangerous situations often cause fear, those
of us who have given our lives to God need not be concerned because
we are under His protection. He is our Shelter from the impending storms
of life.
There are many examples from the Bible of children of God who were
affected by real dangers, but God delivered them. The accounts of David,
Daniel,
and Paul, just to name a few, remind us that God can overcome any
threat. Even when situations do not turn out as we had hoped, God is
able to give
His children internal peace at all times. So yes, when faced with
real dangers, we can choose not to fear but to rest in the assurance
that God is
in control and He will see us through whatever adversities we face.
Those who are not serving
God may choose not to fear, but their decision is merely an exercise in
controlling emotions; our decision is to recognize the
reality that there is no valid reason for fear when the Almighty is
on our side. If you are overwhelmed by fear because of circumstances
around you,
claim the promise from 2 Timothy 1:7 and put your trust in God.
He
will grant you His peace. Indeed, the dangers around us are real, but we
have a
God who can deliver us from them all. Therefore, we need not fear.
Heavenly
father, protect us from all danger in this world. Give us the peace and
assurance that comes from knowing that You are always in control and
nothing can happen to us without You allowing it.
