Have
you ever felt alone?
When youβre going through a
difficult time, nothing means more than having someone come alongside who
understands what youβre going through.
βJesus weptβ is famous as the
shortest verse in the Bible (John 11:35), but to me the real power of that
two-word passage from the story of Lazarus is the reassurance that Jesus underΒstands
what life is like for us.
He doesnβt ask anything of us that
He wasnβt willing to do Himself, and He promises to be with us in all we have
to go through. For example:
- Jesus knew temptation: βHe was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satanβ (Mark 1:13).
- Jesus knew poverty: βFoxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his headβ (Matthew 8:20).
- Jesus knew frustration: βHe scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.β¦ βGet these out of here! How dare you turn my Fatherβs house into a market!ββ (John 2:15-16).
- Jesus knew weariness: βJesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the wellβ (John 4:6).
- Jesus knew disappointment: βO Jerusalem, Jerusalemβ¦how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks,β¦but you were not willingβ (Luke 13:34).
- Jesus knew rejection: βFrom this time many of his dis ciples turned back and no longer followed himβ (John 6:66).
- Jesus knew sorrow: βMy soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of deathβ (Matthew 26:38).
- Jesus knew ridicule: βAgain and again they struck himβ¦and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid [mocking] homage to himβ (Mark 15:19)
- Jesus knew loneliness: βMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?β (Matthew 27:46).
You Are Not Alone
No matter what youβre going through, my friend, you have a God who is βintimately acquaintedβ with all your ways (Psalm 139:3 NASB).He doesnβt stand back, remaining distant from your pain.
Instead, He wants to crawl down into the darkest part of your life. If youβll let Him, He wants to wrap His arms around you.
He wants to whisper comfort to your pain. More than that, He wants to infuse you with strength to withstand whatever comes your way.
For we do not have a high priest
who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been
tempted in every way, just as we areβyet was without sin.
HEBREWS 4:15
