🏳️‍🌈✝️ More than Enough

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. – Mark 9:24

During my growing up years, it seemed our family was often on what my parents referred to as an “austerity program.” I had no idea what those big words meant, but I did catch on that they were somehow related to the size of my (very small) allowance. Though extra money was scarce, it seemed to us kids that Dad’s wallet had a lot more in it than our piggybanks did! We have a much-told tale about the time my younger brother wanted an item that would have taken years of allowances to obtain. He approached my dad, saying, “Daddy, if we mix your money with my money, we’ll have enough.”

 

How many times, when facing a situation that seems impossible, do we feel that our personal supply of faith (or courage, endurance, wisdom, etc.) is insufficient? No doubt that was how the father mentioned in today’s focus verse felt as he cried out to Jesus to help his afflicted son. Jesus had told him, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Keenly aware of his own lack, the anguished father cried out, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” In essence he was saying, “What I have is not enough, but You can make it enough!”

 

The man offered the faith he had, and he turned to the right Source for more. The depth of his desire is evidenced by the fact that he responded “straightway” and accompanied his plea “with tears.” How did Jesus respond to this appeal? He not only cast out the evil spirit from the boy, but He also commanded that spirit never to return.

 

What a resource we have in our Heavenly Father! In Ephesians 3:20 we read that He is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.” When our faith (or courage, endurance, wisdom, etc.) is small and the obstacles large, let us turn to the One whose provision is limitless. He will never fail to provide what is needed, and more!
