For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little. – Isaiah 28:10
People these days do not always see the value in a penny. They usually do not bother to pick up the ones they drop, but
I pick them up!
I was born in an era when a
penny bought something. Penny candy was in, a postage stamp was only
three cents, and bread cost about a dime. A penny was
not lightly cast aside! Those were the days before credit
cards—people paid cash or went without. Individuals saved their pennies
for a “rainy
day,” and those pennies added up.
Watch the way older folks
budget their money. They make their pennies count. They do not waste
much, and they pay as they go. I collect those pesky pennies
and roll them into paper sleeves. When the sleeve is full, I have
fifty cents. One more sleeve, and I have a dollar. Ten sleeves add up to
five dollars.
Now I can buy something!
As I stack those pennies into
the paper sleeves, I am reminded of the Christian’s growth. When we
begin our walk with the Lord, we are not instantly filled
with all the wisdom and knowledge we will need. We learn line upon
line, precept upon precept, and a new lesson every day. God is so
faithful to teach
us. Every lesson is of more value than money, and they are added to
the valuable treasures that we are laying up in Heaven.
God’s laws are precious. The
Bible says, “More to be desired are they than gold...and in keeping of
them there is great reward” (Psalm 19:10-11). These
lessons must not be wasted or cast aside. Look at them as “pennies
from Heaven.” Collect them all!
