Matthew
23:1-30 – Pharisaism
Exposed
Then
Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples, saying: “The scribes and Pharisees
have seated themselves in Moses’ chair [of authority as teachers of the Law]; so practice and observe
everything they tell you, but do not do as they do; for they preach [things], but do not practice them. The scribes and Pharisees tie up heavy
loads [that
are hard to bear] and place them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not lift a
finger [to
make them lighter]. They do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they make their
phylacteries (tefillin) wide [to make them more conspicuous] and make their tassels long. They love the place of distinction and honor at feasts and the best
seats in the synagogues [those on the platform near the scrolls of the Law, facing the
congregation], and
to be greeted
[with respect] in
the market places and public
forums, and to have people call them Rabbi. But do not be called Rabbi (Teacher); for
One is your Teacher, and you are all [equally] brothers. Do not call anyone on earth [who guides you spiritually] your father; for One is your Father, He who
is in heaven. Do not let
yourselves be called leaders or
teachers; for One is your Leader (Teacher), the Christ. But the
greatest among you will be your servant. Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled;
and whoever humbles himself shall be raised to honor.
Eight Woes
1.
“But woe (judgment is coming) to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven in front of people; for
you do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who are [in the process of] entering to do so.
2.
[Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites,
because you swallow up widows’ houses, and to cover it up you make long
prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation.]
3.
“Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees,
hypocrites, because you travel over sea and land to make a single proselyte
(convert to Judaism), and when he becomes a convert, you make him twice as much
a son of hell as you are.
4.
“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears [an oath] by the sanctuary of the
temple, that is nothing (non-binding); but whoever swears [an oath] by the gold of the temple is
obligated
[as a debtor to fulfill his vow and keep his promise].’ You fools and blind men! Which
is more important, the gold or the sanctuary of the temple that sanctified the
gold? And [you scribes and Pharisees
say], ‘Whoever
swears [an
oath] by the
altar, that is nothing (non-binding), but whoever swears [an oath] by the offering on it, he is
obligated
[as a debtor to fulfill his vow and keep his promise].’ You [spiritually] blind men, which is more
important, the offering, or the altar that sanctifies the offering? Therefore, whoever swears [an oath] by the altar, swears both by
it and by everything [offered] on it.
And whoever
swears [an
oath] by the
sanctuary of the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells within it. And whoever swears [an oath] by heaven, swears both by the
throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.
5.
“Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you give a tenth (tithe) of your
mint and dill and cumin [focusing on minor matters], and have neglected the weightier [more important moral and
spiritual] provisions
of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the [primary] things you ought to have done
without neglecting the others. You [spiritually] blind guides, who strain out a
gnat
[consuming yourselves with minuscule matters] and swallow a camel [ignoring and violating
God’s precepts]!
6.
“Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup
and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and robbery and self-indulgence (unrestrained greed). You [spiritually] blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of
the cup and of the plate [examine and change your inner self to conform to God’s precepts], so that the outside [your public life and deeds]
may be clean
also.
7.
“Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs
which look beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones
and everything unclean. So
you, also, outwardly seem to be just and
upright to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
8.
“Woe to you, [self-righteous] scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build tombs for the prophets
and decorate and adorn the
monuments of the righteous, and
you say, ‘If we had been living
in the days of our fathers, we would not have joined them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
How is it that
you fail to understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But beware of
the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducee's.” Then they understood that He did not tell them to
beware of the leaven of bread, but of the [false] teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducee's. Matthew
16:11-12
Just like the
Pharisees and Sadducee's we are living in a time when men and women are
proclaiming a Gospel that has NOTHING to do with the ACTUAL GOSPEL. These False
Teachers stand in the pulpits on Satan’s False Sabbath Day peddling MEANINGLESS
and WORTHLESS DOCTRINES that feed the FLESH instead of the WORD of GOD to feed
the SPIRIT. These FALSE TEACHERS are now teaching their people to follow PAGAN
DIETS and RITUALS to make them feel good about their bodies instead of the meat
of the Word of God which nourishes the soul and promotes spiritual growth.
They worship Me in vain [their worship is meaningless and worthless, a
pretense], Teaching the precepts of
men as doctrines [giving their traditions equal
weight with the Scriptures]. Mark
7:7
There are many
rebellious men who are empty talkers [just windbags] and deceivers; especially
those of the circumcision [those Jews who insist that Gentile believers must be
circumcised and keep the Law in order to be saved]. They must be silenced,
because they are upsetting whole families by teaching things they should not
teach for the purpose of dishonest financial gain. Titus
1:10-11
O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted
to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what
is falsely called "knowledge"-- which some have professed and thus
gone astray from the faith Grace be with you.
1Timothy
6:20-21
Do not be
carried away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to
be established and strengthened by grace and not by foods [rules of diet
and ritualistic meals], which bring no benefit or spiritual growth to
those who observe them. Hebrews
13:9
So My hand will
be against the [counterfeit] prophets who see (make up) empty and
delusive visions and who give lying prophecies. They will have no place in the
[secret] council of My people, nor will they be recorded in the register of the
house of Israel, nor will they enter into the land of Israel, that you may know
[without any doubt] that I am the Lord God. Ezekiel
13:9
Jesus warns that
many will come in His name who will be counterfeit teachers, ferocious wolves
sent by Satan to devour the TRUTH and replace it with a LIE. He warns His
followers that these men and women will be so cunning with their words that
many will follow them even His precious children will follow them believing the
LIES. Jesus warns that anyone who gives these FALSE TEACHERS the time of day
will be carried away with them in their evil deeds.
Let no one
deceive you with empty arguments [that encourage you to sin], for because of
these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience [those who
habitually sin]. Ephesians
5:6
I know that
after I am gone, [false teachers like] ferocious wolves will come in among you,
not sparing the flock; even from among your own selves men will arise, speaking
perverse and distorted things,
to draw away the disciples after themselves [as their followers]. Acts
20:29-30
Jesus began to
say to them, “Be
careful and see to it that no
one misleads you. Many will come in My name [misusing My name or claiming to be the
Messiah], saying,
‘I am He!’ and will deceive and mislead many. Mark
13:5-6
The coming of
the [Antichrist, the lawless] one is through the activity of Satan, [attended]
with great power [all kinds of counterfeit miracles] and [deceptive] signs and
false wonders [all of them lies], and by unlimited seduction to evil and with all the deception of
wickedness for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the love
of the truth [of the gospel] so as to be saved [they were spiritually blind,
and rejected the truth that would have saved them]. 2
Thessalonians 2:9-10
If anyone
teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our
Lord Jesus Christ, and with the doctrine and
teaching which is in agreement with godliness (personal integrity, upright
behavior), he is conceited and woefully ignorant
[understanding nothing]. He has a morbid interest in controversial questions
and disputes about words, which produces envy, quarrels, verbal abuse, evil
suspicions, and perpetual friction between men who are corrupted in mind and
deprived of the truth, who think that godliness is a source of profit [a
lucrative, money-making business—withdraw from them]. 1Timothy
6:3-5
Woe
to you when all the people speak well of you and praise you, for
their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way. Luke
6:26
Anyone who runs
on ahead and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ [that is, one who is not
content with what He taught], does not have God; but the one who continues to remain in the teaching
[of Christ does have God], he has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes
to you and does not bring this teaching [but diminishes or adds to the doctrine
of Christ], do not receive or
welcome him into your house, and do not give him a greeting or any encouragement; for the one who
gives him a greeting [who encourages him or wishes him success, unwittingly]
participates in his evil deeds. 2
John 1:9-11
I remember a time when I was just a
teenager eager to be feed the Word of God because I knew in my heart God had
called me into the ministry of His Word.
It was in this small church in my hometown that I attended worship
service on a Wednesday evening. During this service our Pastor had invited a
“Prophet” to come and speak. I do not remember much about his sermon, but I do
remember the moment he began “Prophesying” over the young people. He had us all
line up in a line in front of the church and proceeded to lay hands on each one
of us and “prophesy” over us. THANK GOD I had enough WORD of GOD in me that I
could discern that this man was a FALSE PROPHET. I listened as he was coming
down the line at all the things he was “prophesying” over my friends. I began
to have an uneasy feeling about this man in my spirit because the words he was
speaking did not sound anything like the scriptures. Still I waited in
anticipation for him to get to me because I was eager to hear a word from God. Was
I ever disappointed as this man began to speak over me!!! I pushed his hand
away and called him out as a FALSE PROPHET and left the line. I was of course
latter chastised by my Pastor. My Pastor did give me the chance to explain my
actions. I told my Pastor that he needed to make sure he was sure someone was a
true man of God before allowing them to touch the young people in the church. I
told him what this man began to prophesy over me was a LIE. I was told by this
Pastor with all sincerity that the “Prophet” was probably just having an off
night.
REALLY!?! An OFF NIGHT!!! A TRUE PROPHET
of GOD SPEAKS ONLY WHAT GOD tells him to speak. He or she does NOT have an OFF
NIGHT!!! Needless to say I left that Pastors office very disappointed in the
man who was suppose to be PROTECTING his flock from these DECEPTIVE PEOPLE.
Oh I almost forgot to tell you what this
“Prophet” was prophesying over me. He started out by telling me he saw me out
in Right Field on a Baseball field and I was very frustrated because my coach
would not let me Pitch. He then said not to worry because my time was coming
and I would be a great Pitcher if I just held my ground.
What a load of BS I said to myself and a
little out loud, because I have NEVER played Baseball and NEVER wanted to play
Baseball. So you can see why it upset me so much when my Pastor told me the
“Prophet” was probably having an OFF NIGHT…
My point is this my Brothers and Sisters
in Christ Jesus, ALWAYS stand up against these FALSE PROPHETS so they will know
that GOD has so penetrated your life that you will never believe their LIES!!!
Forever in Christ Jesus Service,
